Well I figured something out
That you didn't know 'bout benders
Yes it's something 'bout
The rest of us
The ones with fluid gender!
You may not know when looking
"Is that a he or she?"
You think there's just a screw loose
That we're nuttier than can be.
But today as I read
About a child and Faery
I remembered things I wrote before
To me they're all quite scary
I put 'em down in times gone past
Before I came around
Found what I know right now
Not then
And memories of how
I'd worn my shorts under skirts
When I was just a kid.
Of how I'd had to play a part
In everything I did.
I thought of all the hard won rights
That women and blacks got
It reminded me that in "their" eyes
I'll always be queer and "Not"
You're "not a boy" they said to me
Nor a bootblack either.
You're "not a man" without a thingy.
And clothes won't change it neither.
I remembered in a musical
When I'd won my favorite part
As gondolier, a part "for boys"
And how happy I'd been in art.
The teacher said "It's fine you know,
Or did you never hear.
That Peter Pan, when he first flew,
Was a girl inside that gear."
Now that was one I didn't know.
And over time it's hidden.
On the stage we get to be
The things that were forbidden.
And now when drag kings strut the stage
Showing off their stuff.
People think it's just for play
But for some play's not enough
So find your own Blue Faery
Your Wendy Lady too.
Do whatever it takes to be the boy
Who others never knew
Because no matter what they say
You're "Not" to him or her...
What really matters
Is what's inside
Not if they call you Sir.
Yes, I figured something out
That you didn't know 'bout benders
Yes it's something 'bout
The rest of us
The ones with fluid gender!
You may not know when looking
"Is that a he or she?"
You think there's just a screw loose
That we're nuttier than can be.
But the truth my friend
That I have found
Is that there is no boundary
There is no true defining line
Because gender isn't binary
No it's not two things
As you were taught
Male and Female aren't "Just it"
There's more out here
Than he and she
And most of us aren't "it"
We aren't a thing to point out
To laugh and throw your stones
No we're really just like you and he
So don't you take that tone
Though your words and threats may scare me
It's funnier than you know
Because when you get down to it
She might be your brother Joe.
There's more benders than the straight ones think
When they peek inside their heads.
While the straight and narrow is not wide
Our land of benders never ends.
So do not fret my little friend
When you feel alone.
There's lots of us around you.
Someone you even know
Is secretly a boy inside
A guy who likes your tresses
And privatly the "guy next door"
Is trying on his dresses.
You'll never know, and that's the thing.
You never really did.
Some of us look just like you
Or like your brother Sid.
So you may as well pontificate
And ponder till you're blue
Then stop and wonder a bit more
Until you find it's true
And when you've done your thinking
And your paradigm it shifts
Open up your mind and join us
Even if your gender fits.
For even those whose gender
Is the same inside and out.
Can befriend a gender bender
And help our planet out.
When it comes to truth you can not hide
It finds you while you sleep.
You may as well put down your stones
And help to keep the peace.
Yes we're in the world some out and proud
Some transitioned and moved on.
And you may as well admit we're here,
Hello, my name is Sean.
